Let’s Talk About Fragrance Oils
Are Fragrance Oils Toxic? Let’s Talk About It.
I see this come up a lot, and honestly… I used to wonder the same thing.
There’s so much out there saying all fragrance oils are toxic, and it can make you feel like you have to avoid them completely.
But the truth is, it’s not that simple.
Not all fragrance oils are bad.
There’s a big difference between low-quality fragrance and ones that are carefully formulated, phthalate-free, and made to follow safety guidelines.
Most reputable suppliers today remove phthalates and create fragrances that follow IFRA standards, which are there to make sure everything is used at safe levels.
Many also provide testing, like GC/MS, which is a lab test that shows exactly what’s in a product, so you’re not just guessing about quality.
I do typically prefer essential oils for their therapeutic benefits, but I also use phthalate-free fragrance in some products because that’s what some people genuinely enjoy.
At the end of the day, fragrance oils are concentrated, just like essential oils. They aren’t meant to be overused, they’re meant to be used with intention and within safe guidelines.
That’s really what it comes down to.
Not fear… just being informed.
For me, I look for:
- phthalate-free
- IFRA-compliant
- transparency from suppliers
And I use everything in a way that honors both safety and quality.
There’s room for both essential oils and fragrance oils when they’re handled the right way.
