What Are Phthalates?

Phthalates (pronounced thal-ates) are synthetic chemicals commonly used to make plastics flexible. But they’re also found in cosmetics, cleaning products, and—most importantly for us—fragrance oils.

In the fragrance world, the most common phthalate is diethyl phthalate (DEP). It helps scents last longer and gives candles a stronger hot throw. It’s cheap and widely used—which is exactly why it’s still found in many mainstream products.

Why Are People Concerned?

Over the last decade, scientists have raised concerns about phthalates and their impact on health. DEP and similar compounds have been linked to:

• Increased cancer risk
  
• Developmental effects in infants and children

While research is still ongoing, there’s growing agreement that reducing exposure—especially in products we use on our skin or breathe in—is a smart move.
